Pair of Edwardian wine jugs with silver mounts and glass bodies which are finely hand engraved with classical laurel leaf swags and ribbons. The pair is quite unusual in that their tapering panelled form is combined with Arts & Crafts influenced silver mounts. Each base is cut with a starburst.
The Arts & Crafts movement emerged from a disenchantment with the impersonal, mechanised direction of society in the 19th century, and advocated a return to a simpler, more fulfilling way of living. The movement was admired for its use of high quality materials and for its emphasis on utility in design.
