Late William IV silver goblet
London
1837
Large silver goblet with heavily chased body and base decorated with foliage and floral work set against a mottled ground. There is a band of cast and applied decoration under the moulded rim and the interior of the goblet is gilded.
Antique silver pieces from the William IV period were some of the most elaborate and ornate, displaying decorative features similar to regency design but with slightly more decoration. Design motifs included lyres, lotus blossoms, winged busts, lions' feet, garlands, fluting, beaded borders, horns of plenty, human heads, faces, and leaves. They were guaranteed to make a statement of wealth wherever they were displayed.
