Pair of rare Art & Crafts silver candlesticks

Sold

This pair of Edwardian silver candlesticks is a rare small version of the Arts & Crafts rivet candlesticks made famous by James Dixon. They feature square bases with stylised rivet detail evoking handmade medieval candlesticks; a style that James Dixon made popular and in keeping with the Arts & Crafts philosophy of embracing utility in design. Similarly detailed round drip pans sit on top.

These candlesticks make a perfect accompaniment to the better known tall versions and would sit perfectly in a traditional or contemporary home setting.

The Arts & Crafts movement emerged from a disenchantment with the impersonal, mechanised direction of society in the 19th century, and sought to return to a simpler, more fulfilling way of living. The movement was admired for its use of high quality materials and for its emphasis on utility in design.
