From the George IV era, a set of four round antique silver salt cellars of compressed circular form with flared French gadroon borders. Each salt cellar is gilded and mounted on three cast leaf and claw supports. The traditional blue glass liners add an additional protection for the silver from the salt.

Since early Greek and Roman times, and during the Middle Ages, salt was expensive and silver salt cellars evolved and placed on the table as a sign of status and prosperity. Gilding the interiors not only added to the opulence, the gold provided protection from the salt corroding the silver.
