This Victorian handmade service of Rattail pattern cutlery or flatware is for 12 people and was made by William Gibson and John Langman, noted for the high quality of their craftsmanship at the time. It is a heavy and substantial set and comprises:
12 table forks
12 dessert forks
12 tablespoons
12 dessert spoons
6 egg spoons
4 salt spoons
1 pickle fork
1 relish spoon
1 sugar tongs
Since antique knives of any pattern have rarely survived we include 12 pairs of modern silver table and dessert knives, fitted with stainless steel blades making them suitable for the dishwasher.
Apart from Rattail, knife patterns that will complement the rest of the Rattail pieces are traditional pistol-shaped handles.
Rattail is the oldest of the English designs dating from the early 1700s with the distinctive rat tail on the backs of the spoon bowls and forks. This feature developed in an age when craftsmen made spoons in two pieces joining the bowl and the handle together by means of soldering using a tapered tail as additional strength to the joint. This design also features a prominent rib down the front of the handle and continues to be a popular design to the present day.
