Victorian sterling silver vinaigrette

Victorian sterling silver vinaigrette

Sold

Classic and elegantly crafted antique sterling silver vinaigrette. The cover is finely hand engraved with flowers and features a crisply hand pierced silver-gilt grill, and gilded interior showing more foliage and flowers. A pretty collectible.

During the 19th century many also believed that pleasant smells would protect them from disease. A vinaigrette was therefore a fashionable accessory for the middle classes; a container with a filigree cover used to hold a perfume-soaked sponge or piece of cotton to disguise unpleasant smells.
