Handmade 3-drawer Japanese Meiji silver jewel box
Handmade 3-drawer Japanese Meiji silver jewel box
From the Meiji period (1868- 1912), this is a marvellous antique Japanese silver and lacquered wood jewel box, handmade in Japan and finely engraved with a variety of classical Japanese design motifs that include snow-topped mountains, cherry blossom, bamboo, wasen (traditional boat), minka (traditional house), pagodas, iris, cranes.
The beautiful cast and applied decorative hinges fitted to the doors are framed in silver and the three drawers have silver button pulls. The three drawers are lined with green velvet with one fitted to hold rings and earrings.
Japanese silver is the nearest to pure silver in the world, often close to the 999/1000 or 1000/1000 fineness standard, with little or no impurities. To denote "pure silver", the mark often found on Japanese silver primarily from the Meiji era is called Jungin 純銀. Working a metal so pure, and consequently soft, requires exceptional skilled craftsmen and workshops were often run by former samurai.
