Art Deco is one of the first truly international styles is a style of design that first appeared in France just before World War I. Its name is short for Arts Décoratifs and combined modern styles with fine craftsmanship plus expensive and rare materials such as ebony and ivory. Art Deco represented luxury, glamour, exuberance, and faith in social and technological progress. In the 1930s Art Deco became more subdued and a sleeker form of the style emerged featuring curving forms and smooth, polished surfaces.
